CoronaMelder, GGD Contact & CoronaCheck

The coronavirus pandemic was the first pandemic where IT played a crucial role in fighting the virus. The Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport developed several apps that played a key role in policy to prevent the spread. To achieve this, the ministry relied on expertise both within and outside the government, including ours.

Taking control

During the pandemic, the ministry wanted to take matters into its own hands. Its goal: to develop technological applications with the help of specialists to combat the virus and its impact effectively.

Design & development

Three public apps

We collaborated on the development of three applications, including the CoronaMelder app. This app warned users and provided corresponding advice if they had been in close contact with someone who tested positive. One of our solution architects designed the technical architecture, bridging the gap between the development team and policymakers. By translating requirements into tangible solutions and visualizing complex ideas, we helped establish a common language for faster progress.

We also supported the creation of GGD Contact, an app built to assist the national contact tracing process (Bron- en Contactonderzoek). Initially developed for public use, it evolved into a complete administrative system.

Finally, we collaborated on CoronaCheck, the app that allowed citizens to show their vaccination, test, or recovery status; helping reopen society and enabling travel during the pandemic.

Conclusion

Security by design

All COVID-related applications were developed as open source, with privacy and security by design as guiding principles. Together, these three apps played a crucial role in the Netherlands’ response to the pandemic.

Maintaining an aircraft engine with AI

Did you know that a single aircraft engine contains around 4,800 precision bolts? Each of these bolts requires regular maintenance to ensure flight safety. KLM Engineering & Maintenance is responsible for this process. In collaboration with DZB Leiden, the bolts are washed, inspected, and resorted. But how do you sort 4,800 bolts quickly, accurately, and efficiently? That’s where Dawn Technology came in.
